FAQs

Candle Wax

My candle dripped wax on our laminate floor. Is it ruined?  What should I do? Allow to the wax to harden and gently scrape with a plastic scraper.Remove any residue with rubbing alcohol or 100% pure acetone.

Christmas Tree

Is it OK to put a Christmas tree on my laminate floor? Yes, as long as the tree stand has felt protectors and any water spills are wiped up immediately. It also will help if you place a liner – newspapers work — between the stand and the floor extending out to the drip line of the branches. That will keep needles and any sap from touching the laminate, making post-holiday clean-up that much easier.

Cleaning

How should I clean laminate flooring? We recommend buying a laminate-flooring cleaning kit. You can also clean your laminate floor using a damp mop and a homemade cleaning fluid made from three parts of water and one part of vinegar.

Juice, Wine, Grease and Chocolate

How do I remove juice, wine, grease and chocolate? Dampen a rag with water and laminate floor cleaner and spot clean. Cigarette burns, asphalt, shoe polish, paint, ink, crayon, dried foods and nail polish How do I remove these? Dampen a rag with rubbing alcohol or 100% pure acetone and spot clean.

Candle Wax and Chewing Gum

How do I remove candle wax or chewing gum? Allow it to harden and gently scrape with a plastic scraper. Your “Care and Cleaning” instructions state: “Do not use any cleaning agents containing wax, oil or polish.” What type of agent is recommended to help care of the surface finish and minimize the effects debris? We recommend the use of our laminate-floor cleaner, which is available at selected retailers in a maintenance kit. It contains a 32-oz. bottle of the laminate cleaner, a dust mop, felt protectors sized to fit chair and table legs, an advanced cleaning formula and a redeemable coupon for a color-fill repair kit. Please use felt protectors under furniture and replace all hard plastic or metal rollers on chairs with soft rubber rollers to avoid scratching the floor’s surface.

Flooded Floor

My laminate floor was flooded. Can I keep it? Water is the worst enemy of laminate flooring. Dry the flooded area completely and as soon as possible. Your floors may start to warp because water entered into the seams, making them swell. If so, you will need to uninstall your flooring and let the room dry completely before reinstalling new flooring. Planks involved with floods caused by exterior water or waste water are not recommended for re-installation.   Please note that floods are not covered by our warranty. We recommend contacting your homeowner’s insurance agent.

Gaps

Cooler weather has caused gaps between the planks and my floor. What should I do? Because the high-density fiberboard used in laminate flooring responds to extremes in temperature and humidity, you may need to operate a humidifier.

Humidity

What can be done to keep the humidity in check in our basement? Most basements are notoriously more humid than other rooms. Swiss Krono laminate flooring should always be in a climate-controlled environment where the humidity level stays below 75%. A dehumidifier can help ensure this. Just be aware that portable humidifiers need to be emptied as often as once a day or they stop working. Built-in humidifiers that drain outside the house avoid that problem, but are more expensive.

Kitchen

I’m looking at installing your laminate in my kitchen. Two questions: 1. Should/Can I install under the refrigerator? Laminate flooring can be installed under your refrigerator but should not be installed under any stationary or extremely heavy furniture as this would prevent the flooring from expanding and contracting. Please work around the island leaving an expansion gap of 3/8 inch to the flooring. 2. Can I lift the center island out of the room, run the laminate across the width of the kitchen, then fasten down the center island back in the middle on top of the laminate? We also recommend adding glue to all four sides of each plank before installing the flooring around your sink, refrigerator and any other areas where water may occasionally be present. All expansion spaces in these areas must be filled with a 100% mildew-resistant silicone sealant. This will help you prevent any damages.

Pets (birds, fish, dogs, etc.)

Will the finish on your flooring product withstand occasional bird droppings without staining or other damage as long as they are cleaned off in a short period of time? Bird droppings will not stain Swiss Krono flooring. We recommend the use of a damp mop to remove the droppings. Never use excessive amounts of water.Gluing the planks in areas that are continually exposed to moisture is highly recommended as it will keep any fluids from getting between the planks. We have fish. Are there any special considerations we should make in setting up our aquarium? Two things to consider: Set the tank up on a piece of furniture or pedestal with a solid base rather than one with feet and make sure it is level. Water weighs a lot, so this will distribute weight evenly across the planks. Also, be cautious when filling, emptying or cleaning the tank. While smaller spills can be wiped up quickly and won’t harm the laminate floor, larger spills can cause serious damages to the core material and will not be covered by our warranty. Can dogs scratch laminate floors? Laminate flooring by its very nature and construction is extremely durable and able to withstand scratches from even the biggest household animals. However, sometimes scratches happen. If and when a scratch happens, you’ll want to use a laminate-floor repair kit. How can I protect my laminate floor from dog urine, dog saliva, dog sweat and tracking water from the dog’s bowl? Fluids are the enemy of laminate floors because they can seep into the seams between the laminate planks. For that reason, it’s critical to immediately wipe up wet areas.   Some preventative steps you can take:

  • Placing a tray with an absorbent mat under your dog’s water bowl.
  • Encouraging your sweating dog to cool down on a mat rather than on the laminate.
  • Adding a continuous bead of PVA Type II glue to the edges of any laminate planks likely to be exposed to moisture. Glue will keep any fluids from getting in between the planks.

How can I completely erase dog tracks from my laminate floors? If your laminate floor is highly glossy, you’ll want to clean it frequently with hot water in a spray or mister bottle and a microfiber mop. High-gloss laminate flooring often shows prints — especially so if you have a dog. How can I remove muddy paw prints? If the mud is wet, wipe it up quickly. Consider adding doormats by your doors to remove mud before it gets tracked in. For dry mud, vacuuming or sweeping will do the trick. Just make sure your vacuum doesn’t use a beater brush. Do not use floor steam cleaners and wet jets. They add moisture to the mix and can damage your floor.

Plants

I’m bringing my plants in for the winter. Is it OK to put the plants around the treadmill? It shouldn’t be a problem if you are careful to protect the laminate floor from moisture. Moisture is the enemy of all laminate floors. Use planters that ensure no water will leak on your floor after watering. Wipe all spills off immediately.  Also, depending on the type and number of plants, you should keep an eye on whether it is affecting the humidity. (It should not exceed 75%, which can be controlled by continuing to use your HVAC in the room.)

Static Electricity

There is a lot of static in my new floor. What is causing it? What should I do? Static electricity occurs as a natural consequence of electron transfer between contacting surfaces, and is influenced by air humidity, clothing and materials used in upholstery covering. The electrostatic behavior of laminate flooring or any other wood material can be reduced by taking the following steps:

  • Increase the humidity in the room or area with a humidifier and/or indoor plants.
  • Clean regularly to avoid dust build up.
  • Damp mop regularly with a laminate floor cleaner (reduces the surface resistance of the flooring).
  • Avoid wool clothing.
  • Open windows occasionally when the living environment is closed with forced air heat.
Wires and Cables

I have a lot of speaker wires, video coaxial cable, electric cords and plugs that were previously concealed by carpeting. Can I run the cables under the Swiss Krono planks? It is not recommended to run wires or cables underneath your laminate for a couple of reasons: First, it may violate your local fire code; and second, it may cause unevenness in your subfloor that in turn will cause your laminate floor to buckle.   There are wire tracks available that enable you to install low-voltage wiring (for example: speaker wire, stereo cables, telephone wiring, network wiring or alarm wiring) behind standard wall-base molding. Some base moldings offer a channel for wiring as well.
